Gun Holster Materials

Before we get into specific information about the various types of gun holsters, we probably should first talk about the different types of materials that are used to make gun holsters.  I say that because the gun holster material that you select can play a significantly role in your buying decision.

How does it impact your decision?  Well, here are a few examples:

Holster Selection - For example, leather is by far the most common material for gun holsters, but kydex is also becoming increasing popular.  However, there are far fewer styles of kydex holsters on the market versus leather holsters.  So, if you decide to pursue a kydex holster, realize that you may possibly limit your choices of holsters to choose from.

Material Pros and Cons - Different materials have different strengths and weaknesses related to holsters.  These strengths and weaknesses should be taken into consideration when you start evaluating holsters.  Let me give you an example.  Say you live in a geography that is hot and humid year around. Leather is a possibly choice for your holster.  However, leather isn't truly waterproof.  Over time, it can and may absorb some the sweat from your body.  This could make the holster start to smell and may impact the finish of the weapon.  However, kydex is completely waterproof and could provide a better material for your holster needs based on the geography.

Price - For the most part, the materials themselves vary greatly in price.  A person on a budget might want to seriously look at a ballistic nylon holster as they tend to be less expensive than their leather or kydex counterparts.

Knowing this type of information can be very helpful when choosing a gun holster.
